Peggy’s Knees

“In the fall of 2021 with significant knee pain and swelling (which had prevented me from hiking), I had x-rays done which showed bone on bone in the left knee.  With no relief, I made an appointment with a surgeon to discuss knee replacement (it was indicated).  In reading through the pre and post surgery information, I noticed specific post surgery diet information focused on more protein(to help heal) and anti-inflammation to reduce pain. 

I met with Teri Tom to discuss changes to my diet focused on preparing for surgery.   She took my regular diet, made some seemingly small tweaks, and surprisingly I was completely pain free within about 60 days!  

I have remained on this eating plan, and am not only not considering surgery, but I have hiked over 700 miles in the mountains (Santa Monica and San Gabriel) this year (and have done so for each of the last three years, since not having surgery).  I don’t believe the bones have separated (!), and I take no medications. “After 20 + years in the fitness industry, I didn’t think I knew everything but I certainly thought I had a very strong understanding of nutrition.  As “good’ as I may have thought I was with my nutrition, there were some blind spots that Teri was able to open my eyes to.  

I wasn’t coming in to lose weight, I was actually looking to gain.  At 43 years of age, I started her program at 187lb and roughly 12% body fat.  I still had some extra fluff around my waistline and low stomach, my energy was still a bit low, my gut always felt bloated and I felt as though my body wasn’t absorbing all of the nutrients and supplements I was taking.
